Where can you find free legal help in the USA?

Many American law companies provide free legal assistance to those who need it.

Some immigration attorneys and accredited representatives offer free legal assistance while working for non-profit organizations. These free legal services are called “pro bono.”

Pro bono is short for the Latin phrase pro bono publico, which means “for the public good.” The term generally refers to services that are rendered by a professional for free or at a lower cost.

How to find organizations that can help with your case for free?

A list of such organizations can be found on the Executive Office of Immigration Review (EOIR) website. www.justice.gov. Data is updated quarterly (January, April, July and October). This site has a user-friendly interface; just select your state and you will see a list of organizations that you can contact for free legal services.

You can also ask for a list of pro bono lawyers in your local courts. Local courts often have rosters of attorneys who volunteer their time to represent plaintiffs with limited resources.

Many law universities in the US offer free legal services to be provided by law students. You may not receive the same level of service as a private lawyer, but the savings will be significant.

It must be remembered that charities have a large volume of work, and it is often quite difficult to contact them and get help. This is the main disadvantage of charitable organizations. Therefore, if you need urgent legal advice, you will have to turn to private lawyers.

How can I get support from one of the charities?

You should be persistent in this matter. First, make a list of professionals and organizations that provide free services in your state. Next, you will need to call them, email them, and personally visit a number of organizations until you find one that is willing to help you.

CBP One — a new mechanism for crossing the Mexican-American border
